Meet Dr. Melissa Smith
Dr. Smith grew up in Western Pennsylvania. While visiting friends outside of Pecos in 1996, she fell in love with New Mexico, and made it her permanent home. Her background is in medical and social science research and she worked for both the University of Washington, as well as the University of New Mexico, collectively for many years. Having always loved animals and wanting to be a veterinarian since she was young, when her dog was bitten by a snake, she was determined to learn how to treat such devastating conditions and pursued a second career in veterinary medicine. She earned her DVM degree from Colorado State University in 2010. Melissa loves all aspects of veterinary medicine, but is particularly interested in geriatric care, internal medicine and dentistry. She is a certified veterinary acupuncturist as well as a certified USDA veterinarian. Outside of work, Melissa and her husband spend time with their two young children and cats, and will soon have a canine addition to the family! They love gardening and having adventures in the wonderful outdoors of New Mexico and Colorado.
